From Monett: The Centennial Salute 1887-1987
Dr. William West, a native of Ozarkian, was born near Ozark, Christian County, in August, 1873. His father was an M.D. then, but later practiced dentistry. After Will West graduated from the Marionville High School his father bought the Billings Times and put his son in charge of it. When the family came to Monett in 1892 young Will obtained a position on the Monett Daily Leader of which M. Y. Todisman was editor. But in 1894, on the advice and encouragement of Dr. Powers, an Early day surgeon of Monett, will West went to Cincinnati, Ohio, to enter the Electric Medical Institute. After Graduation he spent two years at St. Louis; the second year he was assistant to the chief surgeon, Dr. W. A. McCandles. In 1899 he came to Monett to begin his practice as a partner of Dr. Powers. Dr. West established his first hospital in the rooms over the Post Office which for many years was in an old frame building on the corner of Fourth Street and north of the first alley north of Broadway. He put in five beds and later had nine. Miss Virgina Hulse (Mrs. Warren Perry) came here as nurse in that hospital.
Dr. West closed his hospital and stored his equipment while he served in World War I as a volunteer medical captain in Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. He reopened the hospital on his return in the spring of 1919. He succeeded in October, 1921, in securing larger quarters by leasing from Mr. Amanda Wallace the rooming house at the corner of County Street and Sixth Street. In 1927 he began to erection of a brick hospital at the corner of Benton Street and Lincoln Avenue. It was opened to the public in May, 1928. In 1941 it was closed until April, 1942, when the United States Health Service opened it as an isolation hospital. It was closed again in November, 1943 when the facilities were moved to St. Louis. Dr. West immediately gave it to the Vincentian Sisters, who have since kept it open.
Dr. West in 1900 married Miss Bird Raupp, daughter of George Raupp, a pioneer business man of Monett and a brother of C. A. Raupp, a pioneer of Pierce City and father of Mrs. M.C. Shipley. His wife died leaving Dr. West with a daughter, Georgia Bird. Later Will West married Mattie Shelby, of another pioneer family. She died in 1934.
Dr. West and Dr. Russell both were deeply interested in the sanitary conditions in Monett. In those early days young men struggled hard for the training they received. Dr. West reports that he started to medical school with fifty dollars in his possession; Dr. Russell says he landed in Monett with two diplomas, his M.D. and Pharmacy, and twenty-five cents in his pocket.
Since the above written Dr. William West has died, October 6, 1951, of a heart ailment from which he suffered for about a year.
