Funeral services for Alexander Lockhart West will be Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, at 2:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Decatur.
Mr. West, who died Monday afternoon at Huntsville Hospital, was born in Bay Spings, Miss., on July 6, 1930, and spent most of his early years on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Mr. West attended George Washington University while also working at the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He entered the Army during the Korean War and completed his service honorably as a first lieutenant. In 1956, he graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology with a bachelor of science in industrial management. He was vice president of sales at Avenor, a newsprint manufacturer, when he retired in 1994. During his 35-year career in newsprint sales, he worked with such companies as International Paper and Canadian Pacific, receiving assignments in Mobile, Atlanta, Montreal, Dallas, Chicago and Seattle.
Since moving to Decatur in 2002, he joined First Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder and in the choir.
Mr. West is the son of Maxine McFarland and the Rev.T. Barton West. He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Barton West Jr.,in 1932. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carolyn McMillan West, and his sister, Mary West Farris. He is also survived by his son, Thomas Barton West II, and his wife, Nikki, of Alameda, Calif., and McMillan West Doherty and her husband, Michael, of Peterborough, N.H.; by four granddaughters, Cecily Anderson and Barrett Alexandra West, and Emma Frances and Margaret McMillan Doherty; and by two nieces, Shannon Kinchen and Mandy Schof, and nephew, Lockhart Farris.
