He was a vetern of World War II and helped organize the first Special Forces reserve unit in Fayetteville. He was past president of the Fayetteville Kiwanis Club and the Fayetteville Board of Realtors. He did extensive work with the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he was president of the Men's Sunday school class, and was a deacon, elder and elder emeritus. He was eastern Carolina president of Air Stream Organizations. He owned and operated West-Hankins Realty Co. for more than 30 years.
