Alexander West iii (1783-1864) is the ancestor of many of the Wests now living in Caldwell; he married Patience L. Allen (1782-1855), daughter of Ananias Allen, and had a family of four sons (Ananias, Isaac, James Harvey and Hiram) and one daughter (Elizabeth, wife of Clisby G. Cobb). Two of his sons, J. Harvey & Hiram, became well-known Baptist ministers. His wife, Patience Allen, belonged to a well-known local family; her nephew, J. Warren Allen of Lenoir, was the grandfather of Ed F. Allen, long one of Lenoir's financial leaders (Mutual Savings Loan), now living in retirement on Norwood Street at an advanced age.

Living with them at that time were their son Hiram and his wife Juliatha Haas West and two of their children: Robert Oliver and Caroline. They apparently lost Ananias West born in 1845, as he is not listed with the family at this time.

In the Union Baptist Cemetery of Lenoir, NC is the grave marker for Patience and Alexander West. The stone reads: PATIENCE L. WEST, Died 27 Aug 1855, Aged 73 yrs, 3 months. Wife of ALEXANDER WEST, Died 14 May 1864, aged 80 yrs, 5 mths, 11 days.
