William's middle name is either Perkins (named after his mother, Nancy Perkins Martin) or it is Peoples (named from his mother's family). William P. Martin was shot twice and killed by a horse thief/stage robber at his business Six Mile House near Hamilton, Nevada, on July 7, 1869. The killer was not immediately apprehended, if ever. That same year on November 24, 1869, his wife died of Rocky Mountain fever, leaving seven orphan children. They are both buried just outside of the ghost town of Hamilton, Nevada. There are no markers at the graves, but they are the only graves in the cemetery with man-made bricks around them. (Dean Martin Tomlinson has seen the graves.) Source of date of death for William P. Martin: Sacramento Daily Union, Volume 37, Number 5703, 8 July 1869.
