At present, the relationship of Joseph West to Simon is speculative. There has also been some speculation that Simon is the son of Joseph's brother, William. However, according to research done by Charles West, William was known to have only one child - William "Drummer Billy" West. Further research by Charles shows that both of these Williams at one time were living in Charleston, South Carolina. William West Jr. moved back to the Spartanburg area about 1800. There does seem to be concensus that Simon definitely belongs in this family line.
Joseph West was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Along with brothers John, Basil and William, he served with the Fifth Co., Middle Battalion of Montgomery Co., Maryland.
Joseph was named executor in his father's will along with brother William, who decided not to act. Final settlement of the estate was made in June 1778. From Aug 1778 to Dec 1778, Joseph appears to have been selling his holdings, possibly in preparation for a move out of Maryland. In December 1778, Joseph sold his portion of the land known as Two Brothers to his brother William. Joseph isn't found on any census records until 1800 when he was enumerated in Spartanburg Co., South Carolina. Whether he went there directly from Maryland or in stages is unknown. The West Family Register mentions that a son of Joseph West's, Walter, was born in VA, so this family probably went to Botetourt Co.,VA first- then on to S.C.
Joseph West ca 1742-1825, was born Frederick (became Montgomery)County, Maryland. He married ca 1765 in Maryland to Mary Offutt. Joseph West inherited by his father's will part of the family plantation named "Two Brothers". In Dec. 1778 Joseph sells his part of "Two Brothers" and in 1780 he purchases 100 acres in Union County, South Carolina (Union Co Deed Book G-88). He and his family are enumerated in the 1790 Union County Federal Census, and they remain there through about 1793. Joseph and Mary West then migrate to Spartanburg County, South Carolina. Of their eleven children at least the first six or seven are born in Maryland and another four born in Union County, SC. Their children are: Kinsey b. ca 1768, Elisha b. 1771, Burgess b. ca 1773, Walter b. ca 1774, Cassandra b. ca 1776, Elizabeth b. 1778, Anna b. ca 1779, Thomas Joseph b. 1783, John b. 1785, Nancy b. 1788, and Stephen b. ca 1790
