Helen Moore West, Age 94 of Portland, TN passed away February 28, 2018. Preceded in death by father, Thomas Searcy, and mother, Lula Searcy; sisters, Maggie Moore, Maudie Flatt, Cot Harper, Irene Pennington and Laura Mai Walker; brothers, Jack Searcy, Clayton Searcy, Bob Searcy, Jim Searcy and Hayden Searcy; husband, Melvin Ellis West, to whom she was married for 70 years. Survived by sons, Douglas West (Mary Lynn), Hendersonville; Ray West, Nashville; daughter Shirley Panagopoulos (Chris) Brentwood; brother Harold Searcy, Portland; 7 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great grandchildren. Member of Portland First Baptist Church. Her life was devoted to praising God for all blessings and helping those in need.
Helen lived a long life, but the quality of life she lived was complete with compassion, love, faith,caring and devotion to her family and friends, and to the love of her life with husband, Melvin, for 70 years.
She grew up a farm girl during the hard times of the depression and lived in Orlinda, TN. Her love for her large family of 14 and her love of nature helped shape her life of loving others and her love of God.
She was a good basketball player in Orlinda and later met her future husband in a strawberry patch. They were married in 1941 and his sales work moved them into Ohio, Missouri, Indiana and Kentucky before returning to Portland in 1948 to start the Portland Feed Mill-Poultry operation. She worked as an at-home mother and raised 3 children in Portland: Doug, Shirley and Ray. They knew that they had been blessed with a special Mom, whose life radiated love.
Helen and Melvin renewed their vows on their 50th wedding anniversary and took many vacations to Sarasota, Naples and Seagrove, Florida with their children over the years. Celebrations were held on their 50th, 60th and 70th anniversaries together.
