Nov 1931 - Paris, Bourbon, Kentucky posted by glbarlow54
While assisting as volunteer, fireman. Charles E. Barlow, of Paris, was crushed by a falling wall Sunday morning when the blue-grass seed cleaning plant and building of J. B. Wilson was burned to the ground. The fire was first discovered shortly after seven o'clock, and the Paris Fire Department responded and soon had three lines of hose laid and were pouring three heavy streams of water on the fast consuming flames. Mr Balow was assisting the regular firemen, John Neal and Thos. Elder, handle one line of hose when the east wall buckled and fell, burying Barlow beneath a mass of brick and mortar. Neal was partially caught, breaking one leg above the ankle. Mr. Elder received a. severe cut on the head, stunning him and was probably saved from instant death when John Ross, a. colored man noticing the impending danger, dragged him out just ahead of the mass of falling brick.
Mr. Barlow was a native of Nicholas county, the son of Charles and, Maggie Goffin Barlow, and was about 30 years old. For a time he held a position in the machine shops of the L & N Railroad here, later entering the auto tire and accessories business with Garnet Henry.
He is survived by his widow Mrs. Nellie West Barlow, and a baby son. Billy Barlow, of this city. Mrs. Barlow had been twice married, her first husband, the late Julian Throckrnorton, Jr., was killed at "Dead Man's Curve on the Paris and Lexington road several years ago. Mr. Barlow was a nephew of Samuel Barlow, wealthy Headquarters merchant and landowner and James Barlow, Carlisle.
