Most members of Colne Valley were regulars at the weekly club races and many went to open events to compete. In the early 80s, all boards could be described as long, flat and heavy. The photo illustrates the second generation of sails; booms still very long but some battens now used.
The search for upwind speed led to the use of very deep rounded hulls with volumes over 300 litres. Most were hollow and had to drained, often after every race. The rounded hulls and fully retracting daggerboards were hard to sail downwind except on flat water but the upwind performance was excellent. Rig technology moved forward and 7.5 sq m fully battened sails were introduced. Click the image for hull shape.
